FG Plans To Shutdown Internet Access In Order To Rig Election – Governor, Wike Reveals

Published

on

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has alleged that the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work with internet service providers to shutdown internet access during the forthcoming elections.

According to Governor Wike, shutting down internet access by the NSA and INEC is aimed at facilitating the rigging of the 2019 General elections. The governor said this when he received a courtesy visit by Savannah Centre Council on Peaceful and Violence Free in Nigeria at the Government House Port Harcourt.

“The National Security Adviser has met with INEC to ensure that internet service providers shutdown the internet, so that foreign bodies won’t see what’s happening in the country during the elections. They will jam all the frequencies and internet services to stop real time communication during the elections. This plot to rig the forthcoming elections is a recipe for violence. They will not succeed in whatever they are planning. The world will be informed about their criminal activities”.

The governor said that the negative actions of the Buhari administration indicate that they will not accept defeat when they lose the forthcoming elections. He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to emulate Former President Goodluck Jonathan who placed Nigeria above personal consideration.

“I don’t think this administration will willingly accept defeat. They should emulate Former President Goodluck Jonathan who lost elections and accepted the outcome. There was no litigation. He went back home and did not generate crisis”, he said.

Twitter has become a source of livelihood for many – Gov Makinde urges FG to rescind decision to suspend Twitter

Published

on

Governor Seyi Makinde has reacted to the Federal government’s decision to suspend Twitter operations in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on his social media handle this morning, the governor reminded the Federal government of how important Twitter is to Nigerians.

It has become imperative for me to release a statement regarding the suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria by the Federal Government.

As leaders, we should go beyond emotional reactions to issues and think about how our actions will affect the people we lead and our international ratings socially and economically.

Twitter has become the platform for young people and indeed all Nigerians to exercise their fundamental right to express and publish an opinion.

They use the platform to complain, argue and give feedback to the government and its agencies who in turn, use these to improve policies. This is a fundamental point that should be kept in mind as we debate the necessity of this suspension.

We should also remember that Twitter has gone beyond a source of communication for many of our hardworking youths in Nigeria. It has become a source of livelihood for many, irrespective of their political affiliations or religious leanings.

Nigerian youths and digital communications organizations earn a living from being able to use the platform to post communications on behalf of their clients.

Others who may not have physical stores also rely on Twitter to give visibility to their products and services.

Furthermore, I believe the Federal Government should be actively interested in how certain policies and actions will affect investor confidence.

I, therefore, use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government to reverse this suspension for the greater good of Nigerians.
